As bewildering as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a figure of hate who blesses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
