The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
