Crucial Insights from the Champions Cup's Opening Weekend

Now that the opening salvo of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we delve into the primary lessons stemming from the fixtures.

Gallic supremacy has defined the competition in recent seasons, with the past five winners all hailing from France's Top 14. But, the initial stage featured several convincing performances from potential rivals.

Bordeaux Appear Primed to Defend Their Title

Reigning title-holders Bordeaux Begles were imperious in this tournament last season, dismantling Toulouse in the semi-final and afterwards Northampton in the final.

Lying sixth in the domestic standings, doubts have been raised about their chances of defending the feat this year. But, in their opener, Bordeaux sent a message that they are more than capable of achieving another trophy with a free-flowing triumph on foreign soil in South Africa.

Handed a difficult tie at a hostile venue against a formidable Bulls side boasting internationals like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they went into the break down 33-22 at the break.

However, as champions do, they unleashed their power in the second half, roaring back to seal a 46-33 victory – shutting out the Bulls to zero after the interval.

Les Bleus stars machines Damian Penaud and star wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey both got on the scoresheet. Any team with such firepower on the edges has a chance against any competition.

Impressive Bath Look Capable of Challenging for the Title

Bath's only triumph in Europe was almost a generation ago. Throughout the ensuing period, they have probably never been more strongly positioned to add a second star.

The defending English Premiership champions are setting the pace at home after six games and will be looking to transfer that success into continental competition – on the back of a surprise group-stage exit in the last campaign.

Johann van Graan's side looked a very complete and composed outfit in their 40-14 win over Munster, who are among the leaders in the URC.

They blend creative spark – earning the extra point within 20 minutes at the Rec – with tough tackling, holding their visitors at a distance when they threatened a fightback.

With players including Finn Russell and Ben Spencer in the half-backs and a deep squad all over the team, they have to be considered genuine challengers for a first European trophy since 1998.

Bath's pivotal moment in the pools the previous year occurred in the following week, an narrow 22-21 setback at Benetton with a rotated team.

Now with a domestic championship under their belt and top in England once more, Van Graan may feel able to put a heightened focus on the Champions Cup this season.

Glasgow Deal Sale a Tough Start

There are quality outfits everywhere you look, but their section seems destined to be one of the tightest.

In the competition's present structure, a lot is emphasized regarding securing home wins, which is why Glasgow's away victory at Sale on the first day might just be pivotal.

The Glasgow Warriors were trailing by 14 points after 20 minutes but responded with character, and two tries during the beginning of the second period gave them a valuable five points.

With this result, they gave their chances of progressing a positive start and, in turn, inflicted a significant setback to Sale.

With the red and blacks – commanding 56-19 conquerors of the Sharks – and Saracens, who easily overcame Clermont, also in the pool, we are likely to see many thrilling contests.

And regarding Glasgow's old rivals Edinburgh? They turned in one of their best European performances in a long time to stun heavyweights Toulon 33-20, on a excellent weekend for rugby in Scotland.

Is Ioane the Final Piece of the Leinster Jigsaw?

When considering a contender you would predict to be there or thereabouts at the later stages of the season in Europe, it would be multiple champions Leinster.

However in recent campaigns it has ended in disappointment, as they have promised much but fallen short. Finalists three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked the team to beat the previous campaign after backing up a 62-0 rout of Harlequins in the last 16 with a 52-0 destruction over Glasgow in the last eight.

It was hoped that New Zealand full-back Jordie Barrett would be the final piece to win the championship, but they were caught out and endured a stunning upset to Northampton Saints in the last four.

This year they are trying the All Black experiment again, this time with Rieko Ioane, who claimed a try assist on his bow in Saturday's 45-28 success against Harlequins.

Will Ioane prove to secure European glory to Ireland for the first time since 2018?

Stormers Seem Prepared to Challenge

Since the South African sides joined the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the deepest run achieved is the last eight, and last year not a single one managed to make it out of the pool phase, with plenty of rotated sides selected.

Could this be the season that changes? The Stormers are leading the URC and started their European campaign with a 26-17 away win at Bayonne on the opening night.

The words from players and coaches were positive too, with the squad and staff expressing their aspirations, and the likes of South African internationals Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse unavailable for the first match.

The Stormers appear the most likely contender for a South African side to have a long run in the competition, yet don't count out the Sharks and Bulls, who each suffered defeat in the opening round but did play formidable opponents respectively.

The English and French Sides Deliver a Classic Encounter

There were multiple possibilities for match of the round, and that clash was a leading candidate.

Pau have been having a superb campaign, spearheaded by stars Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and ex-England half-back Dan Robson.

They are currently in second place in the Top 14 and the atmosphere was electric at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
